Shockwave Therapy
What is shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is the application of high intensity shock waves used to treat tendon and soft tissue injuries. It is a non-invasive and highly effective therapy used to treat a number of complaints such as achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, shoulder pain and hip bursitis.
What are the benefits?
The evidence shows shockwave therapy to be highly effective, with most patients requiring 3-6 treatments for resolution of their complaint. Some patients get immediate relief, others may take a few weeks to recover. Shockwave works best for chronic injuries; injuries over 6 months old that healing has slowed down, to restart the healing process.
What creates the shockwave?
The Shockwave hand held applicator has a small ballistic projectile that shoots back and forth inside its cavity, creating a high energy output that is converted into a shock wave that is targeted and delivered through the skin. It essentially works by delivering impulses of energy to the tissues, which is clinically proven to stimulate metabolic reactions:
- Increase circulation to the surrounding soft tissues,
- Reduces the pain felt by nerve fibres
- Begins the healing process by triggering stem cell activation leading to regeneration and healing.
